STRAIN ORIGIN
Previously, this variety was classified as Psilocybe atlantis and it was believed to be a unique species since there were no similar species known in the state of Georgia where these were initially found. Samples were later sent to the Psilocybe mushroom expert Gaston Guzman. Although Guzman did have his doubts on the mushroom’s actual classification, no alternative classification was suggested at that time. This varietal was considered to be similar to Psilocybe galindoi (galindii), a species previously believed to only be found in Mexico, and, for lack of a better name, has been identified as such for years. However, modern genetic testing has uncovered that ATL-7 is in fact a variety of Psilocybe tampanensis, a species that was previously only known to grow wild in the state of Florida.
Our ATL-7 spore collections are direct descendants of a strain of P. tampanensis known for consistently producing larger than average sclerotia also known as “philospher’s stones” or “magic truffles” in culture. For this reason, it is aptly named ATL-7 Large Sclerotia!
DIFFICULTY
The ATL-7 strain is a great way to delve into the world of truffle producing mushrooms, as it is quite quick and rewarding to research.
SPORE FEATURES
The spores of ATL-7 Large Sclerotia strain (P. tampanensis) are dark purple-black. The spores are subrhombic to subellipsoid on 4-spored basidia, and purple/black in deposit. They are fairly light spore producers.
RARITY
This strain of truffle producing mushrooms was considered quite rare before the dawn of genetic testing. However, it is now known to be a member of the P. tampanensis family.
