Maintaining a proper environment is critical. Penis Envy mushrooms grow at temperatures ranging from 75°F to 81°F (24°C to 27°C) and high humidity levels, ideally between 90% and 95%, particularly during the fruiting stage. The selected substrate can be introduced using spore needles or liquid culture, but patience is essential. Penis Envy mushrooms colonize at a slower rate than other varieties.

Step-by-Step Guide to Growing Penis Envy Mushrooms.

Step 1: Prepare the Substrate 

Mix Substrate Ingredients:

For PF Tek, mix 2 parts vermiculite, 1 part water, and 1 part brown rice flour. Use pasteurized coco coir, vermiculite, and manure for higher yields.

Load the substrate into containers:

Fill jars and tubs loosely to allow for airflow. Cover with a cover with tiny openings for inoculation and gas exchange.

Sterilize the substrate:

The jars or substrate bags should be placed into a pressure cooker and sterilized at 15 psi for 60-90 minutes. The containers should be allowed to cool completely before continuing.

Step 2: Inoculate with Spores or Liquid Culture

Sterilize the workspace:

Clean your workplace completely with alcohol. Wear gloves and disinfect the needle with a flame or alcohol lamp.

Inoculate the Substrate:

Insert the needle through the inoculation ports or holes in the lid. Place 1-2 mL of spore solution or liquid culture in each jar or container.

Seal and store:

To prevent contamination, cover the injection holes with micropore tape. Place the inoculated jars in a dark, warm place (70-80°F/21-27°C).

Step 3: Colonization

Monitor growth:

In 2-4 weeks, white mycelium will grow across the substrate. During this stage, keep the jars away from light and avoid disturbing them.

Watch for Contamination:

If you see any strange colors (green, black, or pink), throw the tainted jar.

Step 4: Growing Conditions.

Transfer to the Fruiting Chamber:

Once the substrate is completely colonized (solid white), move it to a fruiting chamber or monotub. Remove the cakes or blocks of colonized substrate from the jars with care.

Provide ideal conditions:

Maintain humidity levels between 85-95%. Keep the temperature between 70°F and 75°F (21-24°C). Introduce light for 12 hours every day, utilizing a natural light source or a low-intensity lamp.

Mist and Fan:

To retain moisture, mist the chamber lightly 2-3 times per day. To prevent CO₂ accumulation, fan the chamber.

Step 5: Harvesting

Watch for Maturity:

Penis Envy mushrooms grow slowly. Harvest them when the caps are fully developed but the veil has not yet broken.

Harvest:

Cut the mushrooms at their root with a sanitized knife or scissors.

Dry and store:

Dry the mushrooms thoroughly with a dehydrator or air-dry in a well-ventilated environment. To ensure long-term preservation, store them in an airtight container with a desiccant.
